The Aktau city (before 1992 Shevchenco) is a large industry center of Western Kazakhstan; port on the Caspian Sea. It is connected by rail-road, air, automobile and water transport with other regions of Kazakhstan and former USSR.
Its territory is 165 thousand square kilometers; the population od the Aktauy region is 320 thousand people, and urban population constitutes about 80%.
The City was founded when gas and oilfields were developed. About 169 thousand people live in Aktau. It is the center of oil and gas industry. There is a factory of plastic there, food industry plant and atomic power station. The museum of local lore, economy and history is very popular among citizens and visitors.
