Khabarovsk, a city of more than 600,000, is second only to Vladivostok in size in the Russian Far East. Khabarovsk is is the capital of the Khabarovsk Territory. It is located at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers, some 30 km from the Chinese border. Khabarovsk was founded in 1852 as a military outpost. It is located on the Amur River about 800 km (500 mi) north of Vladivostok and is accessible from there by an overnight train running along the Trans-Siberian railway; rail distance from Moscow is 8523 km. Khabarovsk is rich in water resources (more than 120 thousand big and small rivers with general flow of 4,5 billion cubic meters a year). The general extent of the rivers is 541 thousand km. Many of them belong to the basin of the Amur, which is one of the longest rivers in Russia. Its general length is 4440 km. The largest tributaries of the Amur in Khabarovsky krai are the Amgun, the Anuy, the Tunguska, the Bureya and the Ussuri. There are 55 thousand big and small lakes in Khabarovsky krai. Khabarovsk has abundant natural resources. They are lands, water, wood, fauna, flora and numerous minerals. Among the Russian Far East cities Khabarovsk is the richest in its resources (wood, valuable species of fish and furry animals) The fauna is rich and diverse as well. Today Khabarovsk is one of the largest cities of the Russian Far East, the centre of scientific and cultural life of the region.
