Sergiev Posad (Zagorsk) is the Russian town named after Saint Sergey Radonezhsky. In the XIV century he founded a monastery there that became one of the greatest in Russia. Nowadays the monastery carries the name of Trinity Lavra of St. Sergey and is considered to be "Russian Vatican". It’s a temporary residence of Russian patriarch.
Sergievo-Posadskaya Lavra-is the religious center of Russian Orthodox Church, one of the residences of Patriarch of all Russia.
The very name Sergiev Posad, meaning «Sergius's Settlement», has a profound sense - it is associated with Russia's most brilliant spiritual leader St Sergius of Radonezh, the saint of the Orthodox Church revered in Russia for many centuries. St Sergius founded in this area a secluded monastic abode. Soon the skete grew into a monastery and a settlement Sergiev Posad developed around it.
The monastery gathered all sorts of people related to the life of the monastery, especially craftsmen, who laid the beginnings of some famous artistic handcrafts flourishing at Sergiev Posad and around it this day. One of tourist attractions here is the market remarkable for wide choice of souvenirs made by local craftsmen, especially pieces of woodwork decorated in a variety of techniques
