Vitebsk is a city situated in the north of Belarus, on the Western Dvina River. It is a river port and large railroad junction in an agricultural district. In a northwest part it bounds with Latvia and Lithuania earlier being, as well as Belarus, constituents of the unified state - USSR, during existence of which the unified national economic complex with tight economical communications, common manufacturing infrastructure, ramified transport network linking Belarus to Russia and Baltic republics and Europe was formed. Vitebsk is one of the oldest cities in Belarus, coeval of Russian Smolensk and Ukrainian Kiev. The Vitebsk locale includes 228 monuments of the architecture, 136 monuments of history and cultures, 4 archeological places.
