Zheleznogorsk is a balneological spa. It is located near other resorts of the Caucasian Mineral Waters area, but its climate and relief differ from other towns of this area. Zheleznogorsk is situated in a narrow and wooded valley between Beshtay and Zheleznaya mountains. It is surrounded by rocks and woods by all sides. The therapeutic park of Zheleznovodsk is a real pearl of the resort. It is very beautiful. The park spreads like a carpet at the foot of Zheleznaya mountain. It hasn’t limits and passes imperceptibly to the natural wood of Beshtay. There are lots of routes, which begin in the park lanes. Zheleznogorsk is one of the oldest balneological spas in Russia. F.P. Gaaz found and described two mineral springs on the slope of Zheleznaya mountain in 1810. The first patients arrived in Zheleznovodsk in 1814. In 1825 the park was laid. The Administration of the Caucasian Mineral Waters resorts and made valuable contribution to the development of this area. In 1856 the first baths-building (Starobajarsky baths) was built, in 1875 – Novobajarsky baths (nowadays - Slavjanovsky), in 1893 – the building of Ostrovsky baths. The railway branch-line from Beshtay station to Zheleznovodsk was built in 1898. The mineral springs Slavyanovsky and Vladimirsky have been used since 1917.
